The first dance (with a difference!)

Case study: Lorraine & Jonathan

We decided on a Scottish Castle Wedding, and then in keeping with the Highland theme, we opted for a Ceilidh band (much to Jon’s disgust as this type of dancing is his worst nightmare!). As Jon did not want a Ceilidh dance or waltz to be our first dance, we had to explore other options. We had commissioned another company to do a musical arrangement for us. Unfortunately in December 2008, our composer died suddenly! So, when we heard this awful news, we had to try and find another company to work with, as it was less than 5 months to our wedding.

Jon found Sug Mon Kooky – I personally thought it all sounded a bit “wacky”, but was quite intrigued. We knew that Dolly Parton’s, “I Will Always Love You” was our song, and as long as we could somehow create a Celtic version, then it should still fit our wedding theme.

We enjoyed working with Simon to create and mould “Dolly” – as it was fascinating to hear our collective ideas expressed in different sections of the music. We felt part of the process as there was continual exchange of ideas and feedback throughout the entire process, and Simon tried his best to address our feedback (and on occasions when he probably wanted to strangle us!!!). And at one point I thought we were going from Scottish Country Dancing to Riverdance!!!! ;0)

Simon’s professional approach helped us to get the piece of music that we wanted – and his “wacky” ideas helped to create the masterpiece with a tempo change and a grand-finale mix of Scotland the Brave thrown in! Communication was excellent – timely and thorough and with plenty of humour! ;0)

Incorporating the music was very easy. Our Ceilidh band brought a CD player with them and connected it to their PA system. We had a professional toastmaster so I had told him when to invite the top table and other guests up to dance – so it was timed to perfection! Our wedding party were very curious about our chosen music for our first dance, however we kept it a secret from them all – as we wanted it to be a surprise! And it was!

We were delighted with the Celtic version of “I will always love you” – it totally exceeded our expectations and Simon did an amazing job! It worked very well on our wedding day and we were very happy with the whole experience. The other company seemed more traditional and we think they would probably have been less creative and daring – so it would probably not have turned out as well as it did with Simon “the crazy Maestro”! It was also very good value for money and we would certainly recommend Sug Mon Kooky.

Excellent service provided – so many thanks for helping us with our special day!
